Clotting disorder is very common in fertility. If you’re prone to blood clots, the possibility of clotting is between your uterus and placenta. It interferes with the implantation of the egg and possibly causes an early miscarriage. The chances of fertility treatment increase with the fertility treatments.
Clotting has been a major concern in reproduction since long. Women suffering from this problem have microscopic blood clots within their circulatory system. These microscopic blood clots travel blood vessels, and block the development of placenta thus blocking the nutrients and oxygen to reach the developing baby which eventually leads to miscarriage.
Blood Clotting Disorders and Infertility
Blood clotting disorder leads to miscarriages but they do not cause infertility. So the women who are infertile but don’t have a history of miscarriages or blood clotting don’t need the testing for such problems. Many women with clotting problems can also get pregnant.
Understanding clotting disorders
It is necessary to understand blood clots for understanding how this problem causes infertility. When a blood vessel is cut, the protein in the body makes the clot. When the level of protein is high, the blood vessels clot a lot. These blockages can result in infertility issues, heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism.
Seeking medical help
Those with a known family history of thrombophilia, recurrent miscarriages, should make an appointment with their doctor about testing as well as treatment for clotting problems during pregnancy. The testing for thrombophilia is also required with the history of stillbirth, preeclampsia, or different pregnancy complications.
How clotting is tested
Many women take birth control pills for the purposes other than birth control like controlling acne or reducing menstrual pain. These birth control pills can cause clots in the blood in some women. This is because these pills change the level of estrogen.
Similarly when the level of estrogen changes in pregnancy, the clots are formed. Sometimes the clots are formed after the delivery. These clots often cause pain and swelling when they are growing. In some cases, the clots are formed in lungs and the patient feels difficulty in breathing. This condition is known as pulmonary embolism. These clots are formed between uterus and placenta during pregnancy and may also develop in the legs. This causes the problem of the egg’s implantation, and can result in an early miscarriage.
Blood clots are a serious problem. Fertility treatments cause the disturbance in the estrogen level. The main thing is to check which women are likely to get this problem and which test would be appropriate for them.
There are different blood-clotting tests. So talking to the doctor is very necessary.
In case you are diagnosed with the blood clotting problem, your doctor will suggest you the appropriate treatment. The previous treatment included taking 81mg of aspirin daily for reducing the chances of blood clotting. But this treatment is not recommended presently because it is currently known to be ineffective.
Presently low-molecular-weight heparins with low dose are recommended. For example Lovenox and Fragmin are taken to prevent blood clotting and successful egg implantation.
